This article will review the film Rocky, directed by John G. Avildsen, in terms of its cinematography and video quality. Many people may not know that the film was shot on 16mm black and white film, due to it being filmed three years before color films were able to use synthetically generated visual effects. This black-and-white effect lends itself well to the gritty realism that permeates through all aspects of the film.
The image used for the cover image is from a March 26, 1976 shoot for "New York Daily News". "In the process of shooting these photographs, Zayat barged into a scene being directed by Avildsen and was directed into the shot. In the photograph, he is holding a pair of opera glasses that had been given to him by his friend, Rocky writer and director John G. Avildsen on the set of Rocky." This led to an unhappy situation on account of Zayat's co-star Sylvester Stallone wanting it removed from his film (he wanted it removed because he felt it would detract from his performance as Rocky). Zayat also took issue with Sylvester Stallone's acting as he was depicted as an Irishman in the original Rocky manuscript that Zayat had read and found inspiring (he was actually Italian and Jewish and listed as "Angelo Porrello" on his Canadian birth certificate).
The image used for the cover image is from a film still from the short film Aloha, produced by André de Toth. The scene depicted has Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) dressing to leave his home after waking up from a hangover. The pair of gloves that Drago (Boris Karloff) attacks him with are those that Balboa wears throughout the entirety of the film.
The image used for the cover image is from a scene in "Rocky Sings" (1976), with Stallone reprising his role as Rocky Balboa. "Stallone's songs were all written by Stallone with music by Bill Conti, who also scored the film." Another scene depicted with these gloves is Rocky's famous boxing match against Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The original version of the poster featured an image of Stallone which was not used for the final release; instead, it used the still from "Rocky Sings", inserted against a red background. The box set edition of the film uses a new poster featuring a gold-stamped version of Stallone's statue from "Rocky". The image used for the cover image is from a scene of Rocky training in a gym. The pair of gloves he grapples with are not his own, but rather belonged to his trainer Mickey Goldmill, who was portrayed by Burgess Meredith. This would be consistent with how he does not get them until two films into the series, which had been filmed prior to Rocky V (1979).
